Using Macintosh Services

EndNote supports Macintosh OS X Services by making Format Paper commands available within other applications, so you can run Format Paper either from EndNote or from within your word processor.

Note: In order to use Macintosh Services, the EndNote X9 folder must be installed in the Applications folder on your computer.

EndNote supports Macintosh OS X Services for any application that includes the Services feature. After installing EndNote, you should Log Out and Log In (or Restart your computer) in order to register Services. In an application, such as a word processor, look under the menu named after the application for a Services > EndNote submenu. (If an application does not support Macintosh OS X Services, the EndNote commands will be dimmed and not available.)

Three EndNote Format Paper commands are available in most word processors on the Application Name > Services > EndNote menu. Use the Find Citation(s) and Insert Citation commands to insert temporary citations in your word processor document. Then, highlight the text you wish to scan (typically the entire document), and use Format Paper to scan the file, format citations and a bibliography, and save the text to an RTF file.

Note: Microsoft Word does not support Macintosh Services. See How to Cite While You Write for the easiest way to insert and format citations in a Word document. To use Format Paper with Word, see Basic Instructions (Format Paper).

Insert Citation(s)

This command is available when an EndNote library is open and text is selected in the document. Use it to locate and insert temporary citations:

  1. In your document, put the cursor where you want to cite a reference.

  2. Type in the text you want to use to locate the reference in EndNote, and then highlight the text.

  3. From the Application Name > Services > EndNote menu, select Insert Citation(s). EndNote uses the highlighted text to search for matching references in the open library, and displays the matching references in a list.

  4. Select the reference (or multiple references) you want to cite, and click Insert.

The EndNote reference is inserted into the document as a temporary citation, replacing the highlighted search text.

Insert Citation

This command is available when an EndNote library is open. Use it to insert references that are selected in EndNote as temporary citations:

  1. Highlight a reference (or multiple references) in your EndNote library.

  2. Switch to your document and put the cursor where you want to insert the citation.

  3. From the Application Name > Services > EndNote menu, select Insert Citation.

The EndNote reference is inserted into the document as a temporary citation. If any text was selected in your document, the insertion will replace that text.

Format Paper

This command is available when an EndNote library is open and text is selected in the document.

You should first use the Insert Citation(s) and/or the Insert Citation commands to insert temporary citations. Then, use this command to run EndNote's Format Paper on the selected text:

  1. Highlight the text you wish to scan. In most cases, you will Select All to select the entire document  (the full text of your paper that contains temporary citations that you wish to format and use to create a bibliography).

  2. From the Application Name > Services > EndNote menu, select Format Paper.

EndNote scans the highlighted text for temporary citation delimiters and displays a Citation Matches window listing the matching EndNote references plus any unmatched or ambiguous citations.

  3. (optional) If there are any unmatched or ambiguous citations, you can make changes to your document and then click Rescan on the Citation Matches window.

  4. On the Citation Matches window, select an output style and click Format.

  5. On the file dialog, name and save the new RTF document that contains citations and a bibliography formatted according to the selected output style.
